Convert water units before mixing

The calculator uses US customary volumes and approximates 1 mL of water as 1 g.

Water-volume conversion table

Water amountVolume in mLApproximate water mass
1 litre1,0001,000 g
1 US cup236.588236.588 g
1 US quart946.353946.353 g
1 US gallon3,785.4123,785.412 g

These are volume conversions followed by the 1 g/mL water approximation. Water density varies with conditions; weigh your water when that precision matters.

Example: one US gallon at 3% of water

One US gallon is approximately 3,785.412 g water in this model. Multiply by 0.03 to get 113.56 g salt. This is about 4.006 weight ounces. A solution-based 3% target would give a different result.

The water selector converts the current amount when you change its unit. Switching one US gallon to litres shows approximately 3.7854 litres rather than keeping the number 1.

US and Imperial units differ

The calculator's cup, quart and gallon labels mean US customary units. An Imperial gallon is not the same volume. If your recipe uses Imperial or metric cups, convert to millilitres first and enter that amount.

The ounces selector means weight ounces, not fluid ounces. Pounds and ounces are mass units; litres, cups and gallons are volume units.
